Anal Abscess/Fistula

A perianal abscess or fistula is a collection of pus under the skin around the anus and the rectum.

Anal fistula usually occurs as a result of an infection or an abscess in the anus. It can also be caused by conditions that affect the bowel such as inflammatory bowel disease or Crohn's disease.

Symptoms

Symptoms and signs of an anal fistula include:

  • leakage of pus or blood
  • problems with continence
  • pain and swelling in and around the anus
  • irritation of the skin around the anus
  • fever
