Originally born in South Africa, Dr Sabin Smith spent much of his childhood years in the United States before moving to Australia for high school where he has remained ever since. 

Dr Smith achieved his Bachelor of Medicine Bachelor of Surgery from the University of Tasmania, as well as a Masters in Surgery from the University of Sydney. He was awarded Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2023. 

 After completing medical school,  Dr Smith and his wife made the decision to move up to Townsville for medical residency and instantly fell in love with North Queensland. As a North Queensland surgical trainee, Dr Smith spent a large number of his training years based in both Townsville and Cairns. Additionally he trained at the Princess Alexandra hospital in Brisbane. Dr Smith is passionate about teaching and holds the titles of Adjunct Lecturer of Surgery at both the University of Queensland and James Cook University. He has been published the Australia and New Zealand Journal of Surgery and has presented research at surgical conferences both nationally and internationally. He has a particular interest in Bariatric Surgery. Additionally, he is an interviewer for General Surgical Training for the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. 

Dr Smith is passionate about General Surgery and working closely with his patients to achieve their best outcomes. His interests include minimally invasive/laparoscopic surgery as well as hernia surgery. Outside of Surgery, Dr Smith loves travelling with his wife Jenny and their two sons. He also loves cooking and sharing a great meal with his family and friends.
